Bernie is survived by his wife and best friend of 40 years, Mavis Bennett; his daughter Jennifer Hornak (John); his son Shaun Harris (Lisa); his step-sons Philip Pastis (Kami) and Adam Pastis (Kara); sister Judy Edwards (Val); brothers Ronnie Harris and Billy Harris (Sue); four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Never forgetting his aspirations to become an astronaut, Harris followed a career path that would enable him to realize this dream. His contributions to risk analysis, reliability, probability, and statistical inferences with application to open DOD questions, such as the survivability of subterranean targets, was recognized in 1982 with the Wilks Award for Contributions to Statistical Methodologies in Army Research, Development and Testing.
